The Ellington Kid: VICE Shorts

This short film contains mise-en-scene, camerawork, editing and sound. All of these are used to add to the genre of the short film being violence, thriller documentary. In this short film there are lots of scenes that involve violence, including someone being stabbed. This short film is based on stereotypical views of people in council estates being aggressive and stabbing people in gangs. The target audience of this film is people aged around 15+ in the social grade of C2DE for these people would be more familiar with the narrative of the story.
This short film shows the genre at the start of the film for there is meat being cut up and someone sharpening blades aggressively. After this there is then a scene that contains someone putting frozen chips in the fryer, this gives the impression that this scene is based in a fast food restaurant. There is then cuts of a black screen with text on throughout the beginning of the film that has information on it such as the title of the film and then 'based on a true story,' this then gives the audience the impression that this film may be emotional or shocking to the audience. From this there is then another blank screen that is shown that then says 'kind of,' because of this being added in the start of the film it shows that the film will contain comedic effects and it gives an idea to the audience the type of theme, genre and type of film it is an who will be involved. After this there is then the location is established through an establishing shot, the main characters are then shown inside the restaurant, these characters where wearing a tracksuit and the other a leather jacket. The characters are shown to have ordered food from the restaurant, ones being a classic beef burger and the other just having chips. The characters are shown to be friends for one stole the others chips and they where laughing and joking with one another. The friends start to talk about an incident that happened recently containing a group of men in hoodies and another guy on his own being attacked by the group. Throughout the there is cut shots between the incident and then the friends in the restaurant as one of the friends tells the story. There is then another cut of footage showing the guy that was on his own holding his stomach walking down stairs into tunnel, the man sees tube stumbling a little as he walks down the stairs. This then goes the impression that the man could have been injured from the group of hooded men. Giving the audience more of an idea that had happened to the man from the visuals, there is then a scene on the man holding his stomach and stumbling down the tunnel with the expression of pain on his face. Furthermore, there is then footage of the guy looking behind him with the look of worry and anxiousness across his face as he walks down a different dark alleyway, this then makes the audience feel what the character is feeling for they don't know what he is looking at or why he is acting the way he is. The injured guy notices the restaurant being the only place open at the time, for it was night time, he's then seen to stumble to the door of the restaurant as the group of hooded men follow him and appear from the alleyway. This then makes the audience feel nervous and on edge, this then increases for the man stumbles into the shop and runs behind the counter and he falls against the wall smearing blood, as the blood comes out his mouth the audience then knows that his injuries are severe. The man then looks at the cashier as if to warn him of what's following him as the hooded masked men storm in with weapons as they walk closer to the man. The cashier stands in-between them and the man on the floor as the group starts shouting at the cashier and threatening him, from this it concludes to the cashier grabbing a weapon bigger than the gangs to try and intimidate them to then leave. From the noise of the incident it means that another staff member in the shop then enters from the back of the shop and grabs a larger weapon that's close to him. He then continues to walk through the group boards the door where he then locks the door, this gives the audience a feeling of a rush of energy and excitement from knowing that there is about to be some form of fight or conflict between the staff and the group. However, at the end of the cut footage there is then a scene of the friends eating their food and one of the friends continues the story, he then makes a joke about why he only eats the chips at the shop implying the beef and meats where the gang members. At the end of the film the last clip that is seen of the original cashier string and sharpening his knife used for cutting meat. This then relates to the beginning of the video from the first scene is the knives being sharpened, this creates a confusion and a de-ja-vu feeling as if the story the friend just said is about to come true.
